Guest Artist: Mark Arpag.
Our April meeting will be a demonstration and hands on workshop with Mark Arpag using spruce as the material. Specifically, Little Gem Spruce (Picea abies ‘Little Gem’), which is a compact, evergreen conifer with dark green needles. It is very cold hardy (zones 3 to 8).
Morning session – Spruce on rock Demo 10:30 am to 12:30 pm
In the morning Mark will do a demonstration of a “root on rock” planting with a little gem spruce. Not to be confused with the root over rock type bonsai this is a planting using stones. Mark will explain fully but the images below will show you a planting that he did with this very material that is just spectacular.
(Lunch on your own)
Afternoon session – Workshop 1 pm to 4 pm.
The afternoon will be a workshop where you will be able to create your own bonsai using little gem spruce pre-bonsai handpicked by Mark from the nursery of Bill Valavanis. I have an image of the material below that he will be bringing and it’s just beautiful. Workshop participants will be able to choose a tree, and we will provide a training container, soil and muck (and as much moss as we can gather). There will be a selection of stones, but you’re encouraged to bring interesting stones that you might want to use in the planting. (From the picture you can get an idea of the stone size but something that’s not round nor too jagged. Generally, one would use multiple stones to create the composition).
The cost of the workshop will be $95 which includes individual instruction, the tree, pot, soil, muck, and moss to create a beautiful bonsai (again you’re encouraged to bring interesting stones and moss if you happen to have it). Space is limited and is for paid members only and will be first come first serve until we fill up. Bring your tools and wire if you have it. I’m quite certain that we will fill all the seats so please e-mail me gmbs.vermont@gmail.com as soon as possible to indicate your interest.
This workshop is open to folks with all experience levels – in fact, this would be great for beginners. I have to say I am super excited about this workshop because the material is extraordinary, and I can guarantee you that you will have a prized possession after this workshop. Again, please e-mail me as soon as possible to reserve your spot gmbs.vermont@gmail.com
Everyone is encouraged to stay for the workshop as observers (no cost) or even as helping hands!
Note: Please enter through the retail store. At the rear of the store is a door that leads to a staircase to the second floor meeting space. There is an elevator at the rear of the building. There is plenty of parking. Gardener’s only asks that we do not park directly in front of the store. Generally there will be a member at the front entrance to guide people. Gardener’s Supply is a 100% smoke free property so please make sure you leave Gardener’s property (that includes the parking lot) for a smoke break.
