Kusamono are potted arrangements of wild grasses and flowers, either single plants or groups of plants chosen and placed in unique pots or trays to suggest a season or place used as an accent to your bonsai in a display. Kusamono are anything but simple. A well-chosen and well-composed kusamono reflects a specific natural habitat – from wetland to meadow, woodland to aquatic – as well as reflecting the season, or multitude of seasons, in which it is displayed.

Young Choe is arguably the top kusamono artist in the United States and we are extraordinarily lucky to have her visit Vermont.

The day’s activities:

  • We will start in the morning with a presentation by Young followed by a demonstration. This is open to all.
  • There will be a break for lunch on your own.
  • The afternoon will be a hands-on workshop with Young. (if not in workshop, observers are welcome)

There will be limited space for the workshop. Plants, pots, and soil will be provided. You are encouraged, however, to bring your own small pots, slabs or other interesting containers to use for your creations. You are also more than welcome to bring your own small native or other suitable plants, as well as moss to either use or share with the group. Building Kusamono is highly artistic so let your creativity run wild!

Signups are required for the workshop and it will be first come first serve until we are full (Members will be given preference). E-mail me (Doug at gmbs.vermont@gmail.com) as soon as possible to reserve your spot.

The cost for the workshop will be $50 payable on the day of the event.

Note: Please enter through the retail store. At the rear of the store is a door that leads to a staircase to the second floor meeting space. There is an elevator at the rear of the building. There is plenty of parking. Gardener’s only asks that we do not park directly in front of the store. Generally there will be a member at the front entrance to guide people. Gardener’s Supply is a 100% smoke free property so please make sure you leave Gardener’s property (that includes the parking lot) for a smoke break.
