SUMMARY:April Meeting: Larch Group/Forest Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Guest Artist: Mark Arpag. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMorning Session: Larch as Bonsai & Two or Three Tree Design\n\n\n\n10 am – 12:30 pm \n\n\n\nIn the morning session Mark (and David) will discuss larch as bonsai – with a presentation and demonstration. This species is popular among members because it is hearty to our region\, can be wild collected and are generally really fun trees to work with. Mark will also talk about the two and three tree design. The two-tree design often called a mother daughter (or parent/child) is a style where two trunks—one distinctly larger/taller and one smaller—grow from a single root base\, either splitting immediately at the soil or a few inches above. It is designed to represent a parent and child\, or a pair in nature\, growing together in harmony.   \n\n\n\nThe three tree or multiple-trunk bonsai design represent a single tree with several distinct trunks arising from a common root base\, designed to mimic the natural appearance of a small clump of trees or a single tree that has developed multiple stems due to damage\, age\, or suckering. These styles\, clump style or twin trunk\, are aimed at creating a harmonious\, balanced\, and mature appearance. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfternoon Session: Larch Group Planting Workshop\n\n\n\n1 pm – 4 pm \n\n\n\nIn the afternoon we will be conducting a workshop using wild collected larch as material. This material was collected by board member Tom Hartswick in the northeast Kingdom and was collected in the spring of 2025 and field planted through that season. They will be freshly dug for the workshop. These would be designed in either a two or three group planting depending on availability and your interests. The workshop fee will include training pot\, soil and expert instruction by Mark\, with David assisting. We ask that you bring aluminum wire if you have it and your tools\, again if you have them. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCosts for the workshop will be $50\, payable at the event. This workshop is for dues paid members only so if you haven’t paid your dues here’s a good motivation to do so. Because the number of trees is limited and we want Mark to be able to pay attention to each of the participants and the number of students will be capped. \n\n\n\nTo sign up for this workshop please contact gmbs.vermont@gmail.com as soon as possible. We’re certain this will sell out. If we have more than the cap\, we will start a waiting list for any late cancellations. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNote: Please enter through the retail store. At the rear of the store is a door that leads to a staircase to the second floor meeting space. There is an elevator at the rear of the building. There is plenty of parking. Gardener’s only asks that we do not park directly in front of the store. Generally there will be a member at the front entrance to guide people. Gardener’s Supply is a 100% smoke free property so please make sure you leave Gardener’s property (that includes the parking lot) for a smoke break.

SUMMARY:March Meeting: Introduction to Bonsai (part 1 of 2) (am) & Urban Yamadori (pm)
DESCRIPTION:Guest Artist: David Knittle and senior members. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIntroduction to Bonsai: Art\, Science and Practice\n\n\n\nWe are very pleased that we will once again be offering an introduction to bonsai course for our members! \n\n\n\nThis two-part course will provide a comprehensive conceptual foundation\, so students understand the horticultural needs\, techniques\, and artistic goals of bonsai. In the first session we’ll cover an introduction to the history and art of bonsai\, basic styles and aesthetics\, horticulture and care\, and mechanical techniques. The second session will be the practical application of the theories and techniques learned in session one where the student will create a bonsai from nursery material with close support from instructors. \n\n\n\nThis course is appropriate for any new members\, or members who consider themselves to be beginners\, or even any member who is interested in a comprehensive review and practice of techniques! \n\n\n\nThe first session will be held the morning of our club meeting on March 15th with the second session the morning of our club meeting on May 17th. Session 1 is a prerequisite for the second session in May. \n\n\n\nThere will be no charge for the first session but there will be a TBD cost for our session 2 for plant material and supplies. (In the future there will be a single fee for the entire course but we’re still working out the kinks and won’t know an appropriate charge until the second session). \n\n\n\nInstructors for this course include David Knittle as well as several senior club members. We do ask that you sign up for session 1 so we will have a count for printing materials/ handouts. Please let me (Doug) gmbs.vermont@gmail.com know if you’ll be attending the morning session in March. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUrban Yamadori \n\n\n\nYamadori is the Japanese term for collecting plants from the wild that can be used to create bonsai. Urban suggests collecting plants in urban or suburban landscapes. At the March meeting David will discuss and demonstrate collecting and developing plants collected from landscapes. \n\n\n\nCathy and David have collected a number of species of trees\, mostly in friends or relatives landscapes. David will bring some of them to the meeting. They are in different stages of development from recently collected to show ready and in between. \n\n\n\nWe will discuss when and how to collect\, first potting\, soils\, etc. The first year’s recovery process and further development will be the second part of the demonstration. The third part will be repotting one of the trees into its first bonsai pot \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNote: Please enter through the retail store.

SUMMARY:January Meeting: An Evening with Sergio Caun - Deciduous Bonsai Development
DESCRIPTION:Sergio’s presentation will focus on deciduous bonsai development. Through multiple case studies he will show the multi-year development of many of the deciduous bonsai in his garden\, including basic structural work\, grafting and final refinement. This will be an interactive presentation and there will be plenty of time for questions. \n\n\n\nPlease join us to welcome Sergio back and enjoy an evening learning about deciduous bonsai development from one of the finest artists in the country. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocation: Zoom \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSergio Cuan Bio\n\n\n\nSergio Cuan is a Cuban American visual artist. He has a passion for painting and horticulture alike\, and when he realized early on that bonsai was the ideal synthesis of both\, he became fascinated with bonsai as an art form. \n\n\n\nSergio is a largely self-taught bonsai artist leaning on his artistic background to help hone his bonsai skills. Sergio has taken workshops with prominent bonsai masters Bill Valavanis\, Mauro Stemberger\, and Bjorn Bjorholm to further his education. Although he works on a wide range of species\, Sergio has developed a particular interest and passion for the deciduous genre. \n\n\n\nSergio travels throughout the US and abroad leading in-person lectures\, demos and workshops. Sergio illustrated Michael Hagedorn’s much celebrated book BONSAI HERESY. His bonsai have appeared in many publications including International Bonsai Magazine\, Bonsai Focus and Bonsai Bark blog. He has shown at numerous exhibitions and has received several awards including “Finest Deciduous Award” at the 4th US National Bonsai Exhibition and “Best in Show” at the 2016 Winter Silhouette Expo in Kannapolis\, NC. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSergio’s corkbark elm exhibited at the 2025 National Bonsai Exhibition.

SUMMARY:October Meeting - Follow-Up Workshop and Presentation & Demo on Semi-Cascade Style with Mark Arpag
DESCRIPTION:Guest Artist: Mark Arpag. \n\n\n\n\n\nOur October meeting has Mark Arpag returning for a two-part program. \n\n\n\nMorning Session: 10 am – 12 noon. \n\n\n\nIn the morning\, he will provide individualized feedback on your trees. While anyone can bring in a tree\, in particular\, what we would like is for folks who have participated in any of the workshops that Mark has done over the past two years to bring in their tree from that workshop for an assessment of how things are going and where to go next. This includes the Hornbeam forest workshop\, the spruce over rock\, as well feel free to bring in a tree if you worked on the Hinoki Cypress or Mugo pine with John Romano.Lunch on your own. \n\n\n\nAfternoon Session: Presentation and Demo 1 pm – 4 pm. \n\n\n\nIn the afternoon\, Mark will do a presentation on the semi cascade form of bonsai. This is a very versatile form and underappreciated. After the presentation\, he will do a demo with David styling the juniper that David chopped last March.  If you recall in our March meeting\, David brought in a Juniper that he was not satisfied with her and he took off a considerable amount of the tree – much to the amusement (and awe) of those in attendance. That tree is healthy and vigorous now\, and is ready to go to the next step which is a styling. Below is a picture of the tree before after the chop\, now vigorous and ready to go to the next level. Please join us for a full day program.

SUMMARY:9th U.S. National Bonsai Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Rochester\, New York \n\n\n\n\n\nThis event only happens every two years and is only a relatively short distance away in Rochester\, New York. We don’t know how long this national event will stay in our area of the country. We are not having a meeting in September specifically to encourage people to attend the Nationals. It is\, I think I can say confidently\, unlike anything you have ever seen. The finest trees in the United States (and Canada) on exhibition\, presentations and demos by national and international artists\, and vendors galore. I believe the conference hotel is booked\, but there are plenty of other hotels in the vicinity. You can purchase tickets which you should do very soon if you want to attend because I suspect they will sell out. They will have some tickets on site on the day(s) of the event but it’s not worth the stress to go all the way to Rochester and not knowing whether you can get in. \n\n\n\nWe have at least one member who will have a tree in the exhibition itself! Having a bonsai accepted for display in the Nationals is among the highest honors for a bonsai enthusiast (or professional). We have two other members whose trees are pending acceptance. Again\, please consider attending this fabulous event. \n\n\n\nFor information and tickets visit the event website.https://www.usnationalbonsai.com/

SUMMARY:Champlain Valley Exposition – GMBS Member Bonsai Exhibit 2025
DESCRIPTION:For three decades and counting\, Green Mountain Bonsai Society has assembled outstanding displays of club members’ trees to share with the public at the Champlain Valley Exposition. The exhibit is a judged event for GMBS members who enjoy the incentive of putting on a real “show” and includes informally presented bonsai for those who do not. Both categories are incredibly valuable. The overall show is a context to educate about bonsai as a local hobby\, a unique horticultural practice AND a living art form. Our Vermont club exhibition is a super popular exhibit with Fair goers\, and a chance for members to contribute as a group toward appreciation for and education about our shared enthusiasm for everything “little trees”.

SUMMARY:June Meeting - Literati Presentation & Demo and Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Guest Artist: John Romano. \n\n\n\nA full day of activities! We are so pleased to welcome John back for this very special day. Here’s the schedule for the day:9:30 Early arrival; coffee; Say Hello!
10:00 Brief introductions / Presentation and Demo starts promptly
12:00 (Approximately) Lunch – On your own
1:00 Workshop (See below for details)We will try to wrap up around 4:00 or so and could use help cleaning up.ALL DAY: We will have lots of stuff for sale/raffle (and some surprises). We will have a sales table with pots\, tools and trees. Bring items to sell or swap. \n\n\n\nMorning session – 10 am – 12John will do a presentation on literati as a bonsai style and form\, and really a way of thinking (I know that sounds a bit out there but literati as a form stretches the conventional notions of bonsai). After the presentation he will do a demo on a really nice pitch pine that he has personally selected for this demonstration. \n\n\n\nAfternoon session – Workshop 1 pm to 4 pmThe afternoon will be a workshop where you will be able to create your own bonsai using either Hinoki Cypress or Kingsville Boxwood. John handpicked these from the pre-bonsai stock at New England Bonsai where he teaches. The Hinoki are a fine species to work with and is an especially great choice for a beginner. The boxwood are a dwarf variety and are 15-year old pre bonsai with already nicely aged bark. Either of these would make exceptionally nice bonsai. \n\n\n\nThe cost of the workshop will be $95\, which includes the tree and individual instruction. Space is limited (so plenty of time for one-on-one work with John) and is for paid members only. It will be first come first serve until we fill up. Bring your tools and wire if you have them.  I’m quite certain that we will fill all the seats so please e-mail me gmbs.vermont@gmail.com as soon as possible to indicate your interest. PLEASE TELL ME WHETHER YOU WOULD PREFER TO WORK WITH HINOKI CYPRESS OR KINGSWOOD BOXWOOD (OR EITHER). I will let you know if we can reserve a spot with that type of tree. This workshop is open to folks with all levels of experience.Everyone is encouraged to stay for the workshop as observers (no cost) or even as helping hands! \n\n\n\nSales Table(s)(This was written by the late Jay Gettinger a valued club member who was the “master” of the sales table. I have kept it just as he wrote it and included it in the June newsletter each year since he passed in December of 2020.)We can look forward to the Sale Table. This is a wonderful time to sell or purchase items from members. Bring your trees\, pots\, books\, etc. Sunday morning. Mark them clearly. List the price and your name. You can accept offers…You make your own deals. What’s in it for the club? We suggest that at the end of the day you give a donation to the club only for the items you sell. 10% – 20% would be nice\, but it’s up to you. Remember the members’ show gets lots of traffic from both new and old club members. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJohn Romano Bio\n\n\n\nJohn has been teaching bonsai classes and private students at New England Bonsai Gardens since 2000. He founded the Kaikou School of Bonsai New England Bonsai Gardens in 2009. He has studied under many teachers over the years and notably at Taisho en in Shizuoka\, Japan with shohin bonsai master\, Nobuichi Urushibata. John has been published in various bonsai publications such as Bonsai Today\, International Bonsai\, ABS Bonsai\, and BCI Bonsai Magazine. He wrote a regular column for International Bonsai Magazine on shohin bonsai called ‘A Little Magic with Shohin Bonsai’. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNote: Please enter through the retail store.

SUMMARY:April Meeting - Spruce Demo and Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Guest Artist: Mark Arpag. \n\n\n\n\n\nOur April meeting will be a demonstration and hands on workshop with Mark Arpag using spruce as the material.  Specifically\, Little Gem Spruce (Picea abies ‘Little Gem’)\, which is a compact\, evergreen conifer with dark green needles. It is very cold hardy (zones 3 to 8).Morning session – Spruce on rock Demo 10:30 am to 12:30 pmIn the morning Mark will do a demonstration of a “root on rock” planting with a little gem spruce. Not to be confused with the root over rock type bonsai this is a planting using stones. Mark will explain fully but the images below will show you a planting that he did with this very material that is just spectacular.(Lunch on your own)Afternoon session – Workshop 1 pm to 4 pm.The afternoon will be a workshop where you will be able to create your own bonsai using little gem spruce pre-bonsai handpicked by Mark from the nursery of Bill Valavanis. I have an image of the material below that he will be bringing and it’s just beautiful. Workshop participants will be able to choose a tree\, and we will provide a training container\, soil and muck (and as much moss as we can gather). There will be a selection of stones\, but you’re encouraged to bring interesting stones that you might want to use in the planting. (From the picture you can get an idea of the stone size but something that’s not round nor too jagged. Generally\, one would use multiple stones to create the composition). \n\n\n\nThe cost of the workshop will be $95 which includes individual instruction\, the tree\, pot\, soil\, muck\, and moss to create a beautiful bonsai (again you’re encouraged to bring interesting stones and moss if you happen to have it). Space is limited and is for paid members only and will be first come first serve until we fill up. Bring your tools and wire if you have it. I’m quite certain that we will fill all the seats so please e-mail me gmbs.vermont@gmail.com as soon as possible to indicate your interest. This workshop is open to folks with all experience levels – in fact\, this would be great for beginners. I have to say I am super excited about this workshop because the material is extraordinary\, and I can guarantee you that you will have a prized possession after this workshop. Again\, please e-mail me as soon as possible to reserve your spot gmbs.vermont@gmail.comEveryone is encouraged to stay for the workshop as observers (no cost) or even as helping hands! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNote: Please enter through the retail store.

SUMMARY:March Meeting - Tree Evaluation & Juniper Restyling
DESCRIPTION:Guest Artist: David Knittle. \n\n\n\nWe will have our first in person meeting of the year and a full day of activities with David Knittle.Morning session – Tree Evaluation 10:30 am to 12:30 pmMembers are encouraged to bring trees for evaluation. What stage is your tree at? Should it be grown on as pre bonsai? Is it ready to style? What tasks should you be performing this spring and summer? Does it need repotting? Pruning? Is it healthy enough to perform tasks? What questions do you have? We will do our best to answer these questions. \n\n\n\n(Lunch on your own)Afternoon session – Demonstration by David 1 pm to 4 pm.David will restyle a large juniper he has had for years. Sometimes you see something in a tree that is completely different from the design you had been pursuing. Sometimes another person has a different perspective. Can we make a tree more dynamic by changing the design?Along with the redesign we will demonstrate several techniques. Cleaning up foliage to prepare for wiring. Raffia wrapping branches to protect them when performing bends. We will also discuss aftercare following the work. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNote: Please enter through the retail store.

SUMMARY:January Meeting - Horticulture for Bonsai
DESCRIPTION:Guest Artist: David Knittle. \n\n\n\n\n\nZoom (Zoom link provided in the January Newsletter) \n\n\n\nThe care and training of bonsai is a combination of horticulture and art. It is necessary to have a healthy\, vigorous tree to successfully perform the artistic training. When used together we can create beautiful bonsai. \n\n\n\nJanuary’s program will be on the horticultural side of bonsai and how it relates to the artistic. We are continually learning more about growing trees in shallow containers and how it differs from growing them in the ground or deep nursery containers. This year’s program will be updated to reflect all we have learned during the past year. \n\n\n\nGrowing plants in shallow containers is vastly different from growing them in the ground or in deep nursery type pots. Mainly because of hydraulics but there are additional differences. What we are trying to accomplish with bonsai versus landscape plants is different also. Applying the correct horticulture techniques can help us speed up what we are trying to accomplish artistically. \n\n\n\nThere will be an emphasis on how horticultural techniques vary with the different stages of bonsai development. How do we develop the root system? How do we develop the primary structure? How do we achieve fine twigging\, small needles or leaves and dense foliage pads? \n\n\n\nGrowing trees in shallow pots increases the challenge of having healthy\, vigorous bonsai. We will discuss the tree’s needs such as sunlight\, water\, fresh air\, and nutrients. Understanding those needs are essential. We will start with the roots and work our way to the foliage. \n\n\n\nUnderstanding their seasonal life cycle allows us to tend to the trees’ needs better. We will discuss the natural habitat of the plants we use for bonsai\, the seasonal changes\, and how we can create the right conditions for the tree to thrive in a pot. \n\n\n\nWe will also discuss the long-term needs of bonsai over many years. How do we tell when to repot and change the soil? How much and when do we prune roots and branches? How do the techniques change when a bonsai is mature? \n\n\n\nThere will be time for questions and answers. So please join us in January start your year off reviewing this most fundamental part of bonsai creation and maintenance!

SUMMARY:Fall Bonsai Tasks Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Mark Arpag will return this time for a full day on fall tasks. Fall is among the most important times for certain types of work on your bonsai. \n\n\n\nThe day will start with a brief explanation of fall care such as watering\, fertilizing\, fungus\, and insect control. We will then discuss pruning in the fall\, when and which species.  \n\n\n\nMembers are encouraged to bring trees they have questions about or want evaluated by Mark. \n\n\n\nWe are hoping to have a hands-on workshop in the afternoon\, to be determined.

SUMMARY:Champlain Valley Exposition – GMBS Member Bonsai Exhibit
